This time Google has its hands on the wheel, and it’s our privacy in the back seat, being taken for a ride.Ĭhrome needs a counterweight and, thankfully, it still has one in Apple’s Safari browser. Last time it was Microsoft in the driver’s seat, and open standards and security were left tumbling about in the rear without a seat belt. We’ve been there before and history suggests it’s bad news. And even if you prefer a different browser, there’s a good chance that you’re using something that’s based on Google Chrome, such as Edge, Vivaldi, Chromium, Brave, or Opera.Īfter a decade and and a half of relatively healthy competition between vendors, the World Wide Web is trending towards a browser monoculture.
#SAFARI CHROME OR FIREFOX FOR MAC CODE#
Thanks to Electron, even most desktop apps eat resources like nobody’s business because at the end of the day it’s cheaper to just develop everything in JavaScript and then run it all in a stripped down Chrome instance than it is to actually hire separate devs with native language experience and then port that code to all of the relevant platforms. There’s a good chance-roughly one in seven-that it’s Google Chrome. Yes, it saves about half a second when browsing between pages, at the cost of using about triple the memory of the old site.) Safari will quickly give up and start reloading pages or just straight up crash, Chrome won’t be happy about it (and will quickly start dropping other tabs out of memory) but won’t start force reloading the page you’re on.Īnd, unfortunately, developers simply don’t give a shit about resource usage anymore. (I’m not 100% sure, but as best as I can tell, it seems to load every single page you view into memory so that going back and forth can be done via JavaScript instead of page loads. Go try and load the awful bloated redesign of DeviantArt in both iOS Safari and iOS Chrome. The only thing that’s actually shared is the rendering engine, everything else (like memory management) is reimplemented by each individual developer. This is probably the biggest argument I use when people say that iOS browsers are all just Safari reskins. This subreddit is not endorsed or sponsored by Apple Inc.
